Everett Withers won't dwell on the mixed emotions of becoming a head coach for the first time after the firing of Butch Davis at North Carolina. The interim coach just doesn't have time with preseason practice only a week away for the troubled program. NCAA clears Pryor's mentor in '08 review (AP)

Oklahoma favored to win new-look Big 12 (AP)

Oklahoma is the overwhelming favorite to win the first championship in the new-look Big 12. The Sooners won seven of the last 11 Big 12 titles when there were 12 teams. Now there are 10 teams that will play a round-robin schedule instead of divisional play. Former Notre Dame DL Duranko dies of ALS (AP)

Pete Duranko, a star defensive lineman on Notre Dame's 1966 national championship team who went on to play eight years for the Denver Broncos, has died of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 67. Notre Dame announced Sunday that Duranko died at a hospice in Windber, Pa., on Friday. He had battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for a decade.
