ECU receives 1 year probation from NCAA (AP)

East Carolina was placed on one year probation by the NCAA Thursday and must vacate wins for self-reported academic fraud violations after a women's tennis player working as a tutor wrote papers for four baseball players. In announcing its decision, the NCAA also said two of the baseball players provided false and misleading information during the school's investigation.

Kansas asst. Torbush has cancer, retires (AP)

Kansas defensive coordinator Carl Torbush is retiring after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The school said Tuesday that Torbush, who also served as KU's linebackers coach, will be having surgery soon and expects a full recovery. Torbush was hired after the 2009 season after a year as Mississippi State's defensive coordinator.

Ex-Oklahoma S Everage dies at 30 (AP)

Brandon Everage, a safety on Oklahoma's 2000 national championship team, drowned while swimming in a Texas river. He was 30. Milam County Sheriff David Greene said in a news release that authorities were called to the Little River in the western part of the county on Friday evening. Friends said they had been swimming when Everage, a Granger resident, went under water and didn't surface.

Police in Grand Rapids, Mich., say a woman called them because she was concerned that former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier was going to jump from her apartment window. An officer was able to get Forcier to open the door and "no police action was taken." UC Irvine F Wise to transfer to USC (AP)

Forward Eric Wise will transfer to Southern California after playing his first three seasons at UC Irvine. Wise will have to sit out the 2011-12 season, but will be eligible to play in 2012-13. Wise averaged 16.3 points and 8.1 rebounds while starting 18 of 20 games for UC Irvine last season. He led the Anteaters in rebounding and was second on the team in scoring.

Texas A&M regents approve Kennedy deal (AP)

The Texas A&M System Board of Regents has approved a five-year, $5 million contract for new Aggies' basketball coach Billy Kennedy. Kennedy will earn $500,000 a year in salary and another $500,000 in a media supplement. The former Murray State coach was hired May 15 to take over for Mark Turgeon, who left to coach Maryland.

Survey: Nonwhite coach hires dip in women's hoops (AP)

The number of nonwhite coaches hired in women's college basketball has declined in the latest assessment from the Black Coaches and Administrators group. The fourth BCA report found that five nonwhite coaches were hired out of 18 openings from 2009-11. That's down from the record nine who were hired out of 16 openings in 2007-08.

The NCAA on Thursday rejected Southern California's appeal to reduce sanctions imposed on its storied football program, keeping in place some of the harshest penalties leveled against a school in a quarter-century. USC must serve the second year of its two-year postseason ban this fall, making the Trojans ineligible for the first Pac-12 title game or a bowl game.

Kyl won't return campaign cash to Fiesta (AP)

The Fiesta Bowl offices were temporarily closed Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in Scottsdale, Ariz. when a ruling came down from the BCS presidential oversight committee to let the Fiesta Bowl remain part of the system for deciding college football's national champion. The Fiesta Bowl will be allowed to remain part of the Bowl Championship Series, though it must pay a $1 million fine for apparent illegal campaign contributions and inappropriate spending.

Politicians who received letters from the Fiesta Bowl requesting that they return tainted campaign contributions are responding, and none appear too happy to be tarred with the same brush as the bowl's ousted CEO. U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona has offered the latest pushback, sending a caustic letter to the bowl's lawyer that called the return of the money inappropriate since the Fiesta Bowl...

Former Auburn safety Mike McNeil was facing eviction and a lawsuit related to a former residence when he and three teammates were arrested on robbery charges. Haley, Coakley in Hall Divisional class (AP)

Longtime NFL linebackers Charles Haley and Dexter Coakley were selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame's Divisional class for players and coaches who made their marks at small colleges. Haley played at James Madison from 1982-85. He is still the school's career leader in tackles and in 1986 he became the first player from the school selected in the NFL draft.

Michigan State guard Russell Byrd has had another setback. The school says Byrd will have surgery on his left foot Friday. He missed his freshman season with an injury to that same foot. North Carolina's Breland wins Inspiration Award (AP)

North Carolina basketball player Jessica Breland has won the Honda Inspiration Award after returning to the court following treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma. Breland was diagnosed with the disease in May 2009 and received chemotherapy. She sat out a year and returned to basketball this season. She averaged 19.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in the ACC tournament.

Army great, Hall of Famer Steffy dies (AP)

Joe Steffy, who helped pave the way for Heisman trophy winners Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis on some of Army's best teams and won the Outland Trophy as the nation's top lineman in 1947, has died. He was 85. Army announced that Steffy died at St. Luke's-Cornwall Hospital's Newburgh campus on Saturday.

Appalachian State delays decision on FBS (AP)

A committee studying whether Appalachian State should move its football program to the top level of Division I has decided to delay making its recommendation. Sugar Bowl CEO drew $600K salary in 2009 (AP)

A new IRS filing by the Sugar Bowl shows it paid its CEO just under $600,000 in 2009. Paul Hoolahan pulled in $594,000 that year, down from $645,000 in 2008. That's because Hoolahan got a much bigger bonus in 2008, when the Sugar Bowl hosted the national championship game. Hoolahan got a $140,000 bonus in 2008, and an $80,000 bonus in 2009.

Fiesta Bowl wants campaign cash back (AP)

The Fiesta Bowl offices were temporarily closed Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in Scottsdale, Ariz. when a ruling came down from the BCS presidential oversight committee to let the Fiesta Bowl remain part of the system for deciding college football's national champion. The Fiesta Bowl will be allowed to remain part of the Bowl Championship Series, though it must pay a $1 million fine for apparent illegal campaign contributions and inappropriate spending.

The Fiesta Bowl is seeking the return of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions made to U.S. Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl and other Arizona politicians, according to documents obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press. Bowl employees and their families made the contributions between 2000 and 2009, and were then reimbursed by the bowl.

Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr wants the NCAA to crack down on cheaters in college sports and do a better job of enforcing the rules. Carr was in New York for a news conference to announce his selection for the College Football Hall of Fame, along with 15 other former players and coaches. He retired after the 2007 season with a record of 122-40 (.753) and a national championship in 1997.

Dallas Baptist's Jason Krizan had his school-record 39-game hitting streak stopped Tuesday night when he went 0 for 4 with a walk in a 7-1 loss to Baylor. The family of a former Mississippi football player has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the university, coach Houston Nutt and the NCAA. Bennie Abram was 20 years old when he collapsed during the first day of formal offseason workouts on Feb. 19, 2010, and later died at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Miss.

Texas lawmakers are moving to crack down on unethical sports agents and their "runners," threatening a felony conviction and up to 10 years in prison for luring college athletes into contracts and deals that cause them to lose their eligibility. Longtime Illinois AD Guenther to retire (AP)

Illinois athletic director Ron Guenther said Monday he will retire this summer, almost two decades after he was hired to stabilize an ethically and financially troubled sports program. The move creates potential uncertainty for football coach Ron Zook and men's basketball coach Bruce Weber, both of whom have weathered storms at least in part because Guenther continued to support them.

Big Ten officiating head Parry, 76, dies (AP)

David Parry, who was the head of football officiating in the Big Ten for 19 years and the NCAA's first national coordinator of officials, died Monday from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was 76. The NCAA announced Parry's death. Parry was an on-field college football official for 20 years and worked in the NFL from 1975-1990.

Othella Harrington is returning to Georgetown as an assistant coach. The Hoyas announced Tuesday that Harrington has joined the staff of coach John Thompson III. Harrington was a four-year starter at Georgetown from 1992-96. He is the Hoyas' all-time leader in offensive rebounds and is fifth on the school's all-time scoring list.
