Herbstreit takes timeout from Twitter (AP)

ESPN analyst and former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit is taking a timeout on Twitter because of criticism from fans of his alma mater. In an interview with WGFX 104.5 The Zone in his new hometown of Nashville on Thursday, Herbstreit says it was "asinine" he had to defend his allegiance to the Buckeyes.

Bush case penalties for USC asst. upheld (AP)

The NCAA has upheld its punishment for former Southern California assistant Todd McNair for his role in the Reggie Bush case. The Division I Infractions Appeals Committee announced its decision Friday. McNair was punished for what the NCAA claimed was his role in the scandal surrounding the Heisman Trophy-winning tailback.

Auburn's White House visit postponed (AP)

Auburn's football team isn't heading to the White House this week after all. The national champions were scheduled to fly to Washington Thursday evening and then meet President Barack Obama, who is now set to travel to Alabama Friday in the aftermath of deadly storms that hit the state. Auburn spokesman Kirk Sampson says the trip has been postponed and hasn't been rescheduled yet.

NCAA puts 3-year moratorium on new bowls (AP)

The NCAA will re-examine its role in licensing bowls and has put a three-year hold on any new games in the wake of the Fiesta Bowl's problems. The NCAA's Division I Board of Directors on Thursday approved a new task force to look at the criteria and process for licensing bowls and will not approve any new bowls until updated standards are put into place.

BYU is guaranteed to end its first season of football independence in a bowl game -- as long as the Cougars are bowl eligible. The Armed Forces Bowl on Wednesday extended BYU a provisional invitation to its Dec. 30 game against a Conference USA opponent. BYU is playing an independent schedule for the first time this year after leaving the Mountain West Conference.

Louisville's Rick Pitino will not coach Puerto Rico's national team, citing scheduling conflicts in announcing his change of plans Wednesday. Illinois senior running back Jason Ford has been arrested on suspicion of driving on a suspended license. University of Illinois Police Lt. Roy Acree said Tuesday that Ford was arrested Sunday morning. That's when police discovered a warrant in nearby McLean County for failure to appear in court to answer the July 2010 charge.

Richard Pitino is back coaching alongside his father Rick at Louisville. The school announced Tuesday that Richard Pitino and former New Mexico assistant Wyking Jones have joined the Cardinals' revamped coaching staff. This marks Richard Pitino's second stint at Louisville. He served as an assistant coach from 2007-09 before leaving to join Billy Donovan's staff at Florida.

A well-known former University of San Diego basketball player has made an appearance in federal court in a sports bribery case. USD's all-time leading scorer Brandon Johnson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday, then returned home to Houston. Spartans-UNC carrier game: No public tix (AP)

It is expected to be either the USS Ronald Reagan or the USS Carl Vinson, according to producer of the game who have spent time in San Diego meeting with Navy officials.

The Michigan State-North Carolina basketball game on an aircraft carrier on San Diego Bay on Veterans Day will be one tough ticket. If you're Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson, no problem. If you're among the approximately 4,000 military personnel selected, come on board. If you're real tight with either school, you might have a fighting chance.

Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins has been charged with marijuana possession for the second time this year. A Gainesville police report says an officer spotted the 22-year-old sitting in a parked car, smoking what the officer later found to be a marijuana cigar. He was charged early Saturday with possession of marijuana less than 20 grams, a misdemeanor.

IPFW's Fife resigns to join Izzo's staff (AP)

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has hired Dane Fife as an assistant coach. The former Indiana Hoosier was 18-12 last season at IPFW in his sixth year as head coach. Fife was hired by school in Fort Wayne, Ind., in 2005, making him Division I basketball's youngest head coach. Fife's brother, Dugan, played for the Wolverines during the Fab Five era and his father, Dan, also played for Michigan.

Xavier has promoted Amy Waugh (WAH) to women's basketball coach, leaving two former Musketeer players leading its basketball program. Waugh was an assistant to Kevin McGuff the last two seasons. Miami baseball coach Jim Morris picked up his 800th win with the Hurricanes on Sunday, when his team defeated Maryland 5-2 in the second game of a doubleheader. Morris is now 800-310-3 in his 18 seasons at Miami. He's 1,304-554-4 in 29 seasons as a Division I coach overall.
